Various animals who have decided to live with us.

The first animal to move in was a sweet natured black tom cat that Kate found abandoned and lost in a village called Kalekoy in July 2008. We took him back to Kas and he spent the summer playing with all our guests and discovering the outside world. He soon learned to climb up and down the tree leading to our balcony and only had one little fall that made him limp for a week. He had orange eyes and a penchant for drinking water from a running tap and we all loved him. He got on well with Sox, a puppy that we found, but around about early November left us and went somewhere else.

One day in Ucagiz Kate found this very small kitten in distress and brought her back to the flat. Within a couple of days she had us all running around to her demands for food and suckling. She had a very insistent and loud miaow and we all ended up administering to her needs. So we named her The Ayatollah. Sox was very gentle with her and played with her a bit, but he was often taken aback that such a small thing could produce such a loud noise. We noticed that there were kittens who were obviously her siblings in the village and as she was clearly too young to be away from her mother, took her back and returned her to the family.

This little puppy was living in our stairwell for a week until we took pity on him and adopted him. He was very small and cute and managed to get on well with the cats in the house. He came on walks with us and, although not a good car passenger, visited Ucagiz village many times. He caught parvo virus and nearly died, but we managed to get him through it. After 6 months we realised he was growing far too large for our apartment, Kangals are often very large dogs. So we reluctantly found a shepherd in the mountains who needed a dog and we gave Sox to him. He is now looking after 100 goats and doing well.

Sox - a kangal puppy

The Atatollah - a demanding kitten

(pronounced Tekirdaa)

One night we were sitting on our balcony and I heard a cat below who was clearly in some distress. We went to the flat below and found a tabby kitten crying although he didn't look injured. He came straight up to Kate and she spent some time stroking and comforting him. However we left him where he was as we didn't want isolate him from his family.
About a week later he ran through our front door and basically moved in. He is a very affectionate and sweet natured cat and we called him “             ”. (Tekir is Turkish for tabby and there is a range of mountains near Istanbul with this name). He gets on well with dogs and kittens, often playing with the kittens who have arrived and “showing them the ropes”.
During the summer of 2009 Kate was living in a village called Ucagiz down the coast a little. Tekirdag couldn't handle the separation and followed me around crying pathetically. So I took him to the village and shortly he was having a great holiday, catching crabs for breakfast and sleeping on our boat.
He's back now helping the latest addition slot into Kas life.

Tekirdaĝ - a beautiful tabby cat
Beşiktaş - a fluffy kitten

One day a fluffy black and white kitten turned up and befriended            . They got on really well and she was a very nice addition to the family. She wasn't too fazed by Sox and soon she and              playing, eating and sleeping together was a common feature of our lives. Sadly she disappeared one day and we have never seen her again, and for a short while we were down to just Tekky and Sox.
